Maggots in the Rice

My friend writes poems about her past in an orphanage, the societal circumstances put her there and how she grapples with re-orientating herself to a culture she was raised within but will always feel outside of. Amidst today's debates on nationality and the labels we use to define others, I felt it important to illustrate a narrative that shows how unclear and disorientating these seemingly straightforward ideals can be. I did this in an experimental short film based on the poems of Sarah White; an orphan adopted from China. The film follows a girl as she explores herself, her memories and the way society sees women.
